Welcome to Western Middle School Library/Media Center
Hours: The Library/Media Center is open from 7:25am – 2:35pm Monday - Friday. The LMC is opened after school on Tuesdays & Thursday until 3:50 for quiet study.
Goals: The LMC provides material and access in support of curriculum goals, as well as materials for personal research and enjoyment. The library provides books, periodicals, newspapers, as well as audiovisual material and Computer On-line services. We believe that students should have free access to all material. In order to ensure this access, students must understand and adhere to all copyright regulations for print, video, audio, and other electronic information. Appropriate use of all technologies is expected of students.
Behavior: Students using the library are to be engaged in individual or class study, research, homework, or recreational reading. The library is not a place for non-academic group discussion, game playing or socialization. Students who disrupt the academic atmosphere will be asked to leave and report back to their subject teacher. Repeated offenses may result in extended loss of library privileges. Disciplinary procedures maybe implemented resulting in detention.
Library Visitation: Instructive collaboration between classroom teachers and library media specialist is encouraged prior to each class library visit. The grade subject-area teacher should meet with a library media specialist to discuss the research project and leave a copy of the assignment on file. With teamwork, both professionals can plan a successful classroom/LMC experience. Such experiences may range from data base instruction, book talks, to research and discussion of current events. Pre-planning is required for the lesson to be successful. While at least one or two week notice is desired, smaller lessons may be acceptable with 3-4 day notice.
Lab/Open Area Usage: There are two computer labs housed in the library media center. The large lab has a seating capacity of 27, while the small lab seats 23 students. Sign-up sheets are located at the circulation desk. Due to Computer Skills class usage, grade level and fluidity of the school schedule it is encouraged that teacher’s double check with either media specialist or the media assistant. The LMC has 4 open areas: A (24 students), B (24 Student), C (20 Students), and D (18 Students) for quiet class discussions and research. Please sign up at circulation desk and check capacity of each. The minimum sign up time for all Lab and Area is 24 Hours.
